Japanese Pronunciation[]

Kinda curious here. If she's called "名無し" in Japan, what would be the pronunciation of that? The only thing I can get out of it is that it ends in -shi, which is obviously different from her "Western" name. !8RstuPId2Y 21:18, February 16, 2010 (UTC)

According to a kanji dictionary site I use(the same way I came up with "Rengeteki"), 名 can be pronounced as "mei", "myou", or "na". 無 can be pronounced as "mu", "bu" or "na". Interestingly enough, this kanji means "nothing" or "zero". Perhaps 名無し means that she has no name? But if that's it, wouldn't it be kind of weird to just call her "no name"? Oh yeah, perhaps you could find a better way to word that fact...^^; I couldn't think of anything else to use besides "Western fans". I thought "English-speaking"(or anything else for that matter) wouldn't be quite right in this sense.

It could work like Tokiko did where we use Rengeteki and "Unnamed returning midboss fairy" or something. By chance, "名無し" shows up on her page as well as part of "Unnamed Book Reading Youkai". Huh.
Also, Western sounds good to me. Sure, we'd have to forget about our Aussie friends, but w/e. :X !8RstuPId2Y 22:19, February 16, 2010 (UTC)
名無し = nanasi = nameless. It's not a name.
As for "Rengeteki", anyone could come up with any name for this character. With no official support (Koakuma) and no common use (Tokiko, though I don't support that one either), we have no reason to favor this over any other possible unofficial name, and should take an approach like "Unnamed Giant Catfish".
Some Google hits:
  • 951,000 - Touhou Reimu
  • 215,000 - Touhou Koakuma
  • 104,000 - Touhou Daiyousei
  • 65,400 - Touhou Tokiko
  • 233 - Touhou Rengeteki

  • 644 - Touhou Rengeteki...looks like it's stacking up more. MaronaPossessed 23:28, May 1, 2010 (UTC)
Well, it is the only name that's been thought up for her. And it seems to be sticking to her, based on what I've seen on DeviantART. Besides, Daiyousei was originally a fan-made name, but ZUN made it official. Besides, I don't think that's a reason to remove almost all the funfacts from her page, that is, if you were the one who did it. Also, is it really necessary to remove her relationship with Yuka? It's pretty safe to assume they have some relationship...why else would she be in Yuka's mansion and trying to chase you out in LLS?

If she has no name, then she has no name. As a comparison, if you wanted more information to be known about a character, would you make it up and present it alongside official information? As you said, ZUN made "Daiyousei" official, but that hasn't happened for "Rengeteki".
Well apparently Tokiko was a fanname and still isn't an official name and Tokiko had no name.MaronaPossessed 01:40, March 6, 2010 (UTC)
As for the fun facts: #1 and #3 were just merged, #2 was removed per "Character A is the Nth character with feature X", and #4 was removed because "名無し" isn't a name. (See the edit summary.) I removed the Yuka relationship because it's still speculation, no matter how likely you may think it is. --TheSinnerChrono 01:42, February 17, 2010 (UTC)

She has been hence referenced as '蓮華的' in a Japanese BBS, in response to Western referencing her as 'Rengeteki'. Read the discussion here. The Kanji is read as 'Rengeteki', with '蓮華' (Renge, 'Lotus Flower') + '的' (teki, '-like'), together meaning 'Like the Lotus Flower'. There are a very few works of her on Pixiv, all without a name. It will be interesting to see if it catches on.--68.36.72.151 18:13, February 28, 2010 (UTC)

Name Controversy[]

I would like permission to explain the Rengeteki controversy on the fun facts section as an example of a "forced meme", a meme not created spontaneously but rather specifically forced by a person or group of persons. This would be for history of fandom purposes 128.175.47.73 19:23, March 16, 2010 (UTC)

No. And I'm not going to go through this for the umpteenth time to a group of people that increasingly looks like a bunch of bored 4chan trolls.--Umhyuk 20:01, March 16, 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough. (It would not have been a flattering depiction of said trolls, honestly). 128.175.47.73 21:34, March 16, 2010 (UTC)
Touhou Tokiko has 65,400 hits which became a name on the wikia. It's gonna take a while for Rengeteki to be acknowledged, especially when theres only 315 hits. MaronaPossessed 20:09, March 16, 2010 (UTC)
I'd be acknowledging more of the fact that it's a coordinated "attack" shall we say from the Western "fandom". 128.175.47.73 21:34, March 16, 2010 (UTC)
