Sengoku Gensokyo is a conquest SLG ala Sengoku Rance that takes place in Gensokyo. The player must take over territories as Reimu while maintaining and expanding a roster of Touhou and generic characters.


The game menu is divided into five buttons with subcategories and a status box.

SG Mainscreen


  • (Attack) - Attack territories.
  • (Upgrade) - Increase your Ryumaku (capacity for more subordinates).
  • (Event) - Allows you to talk to your subordinates (first column) or trigger events (second column). If the events column is empty, then there is no event you can trigger at this time.


  • (Subordinates) - This screen displays your subordinates and their various stats. You can pay to upgrade their level or heal them here.
  • (Prisoners) - This displays the prisoners currently in your care. You can recruit them or release them.


  • (Buy) - This option available only after you conquer the Forest of Magic. You can purchase items from Marisa's shop to use on your characters.

End Turn

Status Box

  • Turn - Displays the current turn.
  • Ouki - The amount of this you receive is proportional to your Ryumaku and it is used to heal and upgrade your allies, and to purchase items. It is your money.
  • Ryumaku - This value is determined by the territories you possess. It is used to calculate Ouki.
  • (Cost) - The total cost of your armies. If it exceeds your total, then your Ouki production will be decreased.
  • (Icon) - How many actions (attack/upgrade/event) you can take. You begin with two, but later in the game you get the third orb.

SG UnitInfo
This part of the screen shows the character portrait and other information.

  • Bonuses earned are shown in ying-yang orbs next to the character's race. There is a maximum of 2 bonuses possible.
  • The character's special is shown under their name. Some specials are passive (automatic) and some are active (need to select in combat). Generic characters can change their specials when they hit certain levels.

SG UnitUpgrade
The lower left of the screen is the pay area.

  • HP can be healed, and experience can be increased for a fee.
  • The sliders can be used to incrementally heal HP or increase XP.
    • At higher levels, incrementally more money will be required to heal each HP and to purchase each XP.
  • The two bracketed options to the right will automatically pay for either full heal or full XP.
    • At certain level increments you cannot purchase XP and must level once through battles before you can purchase more XP.

Prisoner Screen

The prisoner screen shows a list of the Touhou characters and generic Sengoku Gensokyo characters that you have captured in battle. This screen allows you to convert them to your cause and hire them.

SG Prisonscreen

  • The indicated value must be met with corresponding negotiation values from your characters.
    • A maximum of 5 characters at a time may be used to pay for the negotiation.
    • Only characters that have not been tapped for any other action can be tapped here.
    • You may pay for the negotiation cost over the course of several turns. Each time you pay it deducts from the previous value until you meet or pass the required amount.
  • Converting prisoners does not require any icons.

Battle Mechanics

When attacking or defending, you may choose up to five characters to participate in battle. These characters can be placed in three positions of varying distances from the enemy with left being the furthest away and right being the closest. Regardless of attacking or defending, your characters are on the left side of the screen.

During character selection you may conduct reconnaissance by first selecting characters to meet the research value in the lower right of the dialog box.

The battle screen contains a position grid that shows the relative distances of your characters to the opposing faction's characters. The distances are very close, close, middle, far, very far. Going by colors, it is orange, red, green, blue, dark blue.

When far or very far, the ranged attack is used. Ranged attack does not receive retaliation.

When close or very close, melee atatck is used. Melee attackers receive a portion of enemy attack as retaliation damage.

You and your enemy cannot attack characters that are in the middle.

Commands in Battle

  • Every action you take will remove a value from the action point counter on your side of the screen.
  • This counts down from 60.
  • Right clicking - This skips the current character, costing 1 from the counter. The skipped character makes no move and the character's next turn comes up sooner than usual.

SG Battlescreen

  • Top left button - This is attack. It costs 3 from the counter.
  • Middle left button - This becomes available after you click an enemy that is further away from you and if there are no enemies that occupy the distance to your character the "move closer" would bring you to. This costs 2 from the counter. If you are moving from middle to close or close to very close, you get an option to attack for an extra 3 cost.
  • Bottom left button - This command moves your character away from the selected enemy. It is unavailable if the character is at the farthest distance from the selected enemy. This costs 2 from the counter.
  • Top right button - This uses your character's special if they have one that is used in battle. The conditions and cost to use these vary depending on what the special is.
  • Middle right button - Move closer to all by 1. Unavailable if your character is close or very close to any of the enemies. Costs 4.
  • Bottom right button - Move farther from all by 1. Costs 4.

The battle progression shifts percentage depending on what side deals how much damage. At the end of the battle, the one with the higher percentage wins and an amount depending on the percentage is taken off from the province's defense. The most you can take off with one battle is 100 points in a crushing victory (taking minimal damage, and generally eliminating all of the enemy).

The end battle screen also has different dialogs depending on various factors. If a character was defeated during the fight,

  • They may run away from their home army never to be seen again.
  • They may be captured and appear in your prisoner screen.

If a character is part of the winning army,

  • They might get a level up if their experience reaches 100
  • They might get a bonus which allows them to receive either 2 free levels, or +1 to one of their stats.

Taking Territories

To take a territory, you must first be at war with the occupying power. This can happen through an event in the event menu or they may trigger by themselves after enough time has elapsed after a faction's appearance.

When you right click, the interface disappears and you can mouseover occupied territories to see the status of the faction controlling it and how many defensive points the particular territory has. To conquer a territory, you must eliminate the points of a territory through successful attacks and protect those points from being restored by making successful defends. The amount of points exchanged in a battle depends on how the progress of the battle went, but the points gained in one attack can never exceed 100.
