Scarlet Weather Rhapsody (東方緋想天, pronounced Touhou Hisouten, meaning Scarlet Weather Rhapsody) chronologically takes place about 1 year after Mountain of Faith (TH10). Henceforth it is referred to as TH10.5.

Like its predecessor, Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody is a collaboration between ZUN and Tasogare Frontier. Tasogare Frontier is well-known for games such as Eternal Fighter Zero and Immaterial and Missing Power.

Scarlet Weather Rhapsody debuted at Reitaisai 4, with a playable demo available to patrons. A demo was released at C72, and an updated demo was released online on April 29, 2008. The full version is apparently planned to be released at Reitaisai 5 on May 25, 2008.

Gameplay

As with Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody is a fighting game featuring a variety of Touhou Project characters. It appears to be similar in many ways to its predecessor, with many similar sprites and attacks. However, the inclusion of a new weather system that can affect the tides of battle, a 20 card deck system for spellcards, and the implementation of flight marks a vast difference in gameplay between IaMP and its successor.

Story

Before the main events of Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Reimu Hakurei is called by Marisa Kirisame to the Forest of Magic and is asked to find who or whatever is responsible for the cold rain showers around her house, observing that such weather was unusual during the summer. Reimu replies that she's not interested, which provokes Marisa into investigating the unnatural cause of the weather herself; but before she can start, Reimu soundly defeats her. The shrine maiden then wanders nearby Alice Margatroid’s home, which is also experiencing untimely hailstorms. Alice insinuates that Reimu is lost, and a battle between them ensues, but the latter emerges victorious. As Alice quips about starting her own investigation of the strange climate, Aya Shameimaru unexpectedly flies into the scene of the aftermath to deliver a new issue of the Bunbunmaru Newspaper, and upon discovering the lost shrine maiden, decides to follow her in case an interesting story occurs. The crow tengu guides the obviously lost Reimu back to the Hakurei Shrine, and implicitly threatens to destroy it for a new scoop. The two engage in another fierce duel until Aya is trounced; the reporter retorts that she was only joking, and complains that the shrine maiden never does anything newsworthy. Reimu exclaims, saying she’ll "do something" interesting only if a "serious" incident were to occur, like her shrine collapsing.
