Satori is the Mistress of the Palace of the Earth Spirits after the underground city was separated from Hell. Her ability to read "minds" makes various youkai and spirits fearful of her, while leaving her well-loved by the animals that normally can't be understood. With these animals as pets, she manages the ruins of inferno where her home stands. During the events of the Subterranean Animism, the Heroine (from above ground) invaded her home. After an encounter, she permitted the Heroine passage towards the Hell of Blazing Fires to ask her pets about their supposed problem.

Fun Facts
* The characters for Komeiji literally mean "ancient and pure/bright earth". Satori isn't written in kanji, but it's pronounced the same as "satori" (悟), which means "enlightenment, profound understanding", as well as the name of her youkai species.

* With the exception of her first spell card, all of Satori's spell cards are based on, if not directly stolen from, those of the player's partner.

* Because of how her hands are coming out of her sleeves only at her waist in her portrait, some fans believe that Satori has really short arms, and often draw her with such.

* A common nickname for Satori is 「さとりん」 or "Satorin," similar to how Yukari is called "Yukarin."

* Since her ability enables her to read minds, and due to the similarity of her "third eye" badge to Backbeard of "You damned dirty lolicon!" fame, a growing joke among fan artists depicts Satori as cognizant of (and disgusted by) lolicon.

* Similarly, it has become common in fan art to break down the kanji of Satori (悟) into its component radicals (小五口) and add the katakana り, spelling out "shougorori", read as "fifth-grade elementary student loli". Her apparently small stature in her portrait seems to add to this. It is thus not uncommon to see her depicted wearing a Japanese elementary-schooler's book satchel on her back.

* Satori and Koishi's design may have been inspired by the 1939 painting by Kahlo titled "The Two Fridas". The subject is essentially two identical women (sisters/clones/twins...) with visible hearts and external arteries that seem to connect and wrap around their shoulders and arms.

* Satori is currently the only Touhou Windows character that appears before her subordinate is introduced.

* Western Touhou fans have noticed a similarity between Satori's design and an image making fun of ZUN's drawing style. It is unknown if this is a coincidence or if ZUN is aware of the image.

* If her and Koishi's color schemes are inverted, they will both somewhat resemble each other.

* At seventy-six cards total, Satori has more spell cards in a single title than any character in the series (one spell card of her own, plus three cards from the player's partner, across four difficulties). The only character who comes close is Kaguya Houraisan, with forty cards total.

* Satori's third eye is frequently portrayed in fan works as if it has a mind of its own, reflected by expressions that do not match Komeiji's facial expressions and body language.

*Using spell cards from such harder bosses, (Yukari Yakumo and Suika Ibuki) Satori is one the hardest 4th stage bosses in Touhou.

Ability: Power to read people's hearts

The master of the Earth Spirit Palace.

The underground city was separated from Hell, but a number of uncontrollable spirits remained in the former facilities of Hell, so there was a need to control them.

The Earth Spirit Palace is built above what was the Hell of Blazing Fires, and this is where she took up residence.

Since she can read others' hearts, all sorts of youkai and spirits fear her,

so eventually people stopped visiting the Earth Spirit Palace.

On the other hand, her power makes her well-loved by animals that don't speak, so eventually the premises began to overflow with many pets, starting with blaze cats and hell ravens.

Her great number of pets made it difficult to manage the Hell of Blazing Fires, so she entrusted parts of its management to some of her pets.

Her pets would oversee other pets.
Her pets would tend the gardens.
Her pets would play with her younger sister.

However, what shouldn't have happened did: a human came from above ground, and she was surprised when they started asking about evil spirits and a geyser.

Satori left Orin in charge of the evil spirits and Utsuho in charge of the Hell of Blazing Fires.

They were both loyal to Satori, so they shouldn't have done any harm. She believed there was no way they'd start some sort of incident.

She thought that perhaps the human before her was spouting off lies and trying to trick her, so she read her heart and was surprised again by what she saw.

There was almost nothing to be seen inside the humans' hearts about the evil spirits or the geysers.

Suspicious, Satori decided to test them.
