特徴	Features
妖怪のうち、ある特徴を持ち、複数個体の確認が取れる者を特別な名前の種族として纏めているが、それ以外の一人一種族の妖怪も居る。	There are many types of youkai with extremely varied powers and meeting frequencies.
このように種族として纏まらない妖怪を、特別な種族で呼ぶ事なく、妖怪と呼ぶ。	Some youkai are classified as their own race, but those that aren't are generally classified as youkai.
幻想郷の妖怪の多くは、この『妖怪（＊１）』である。	Which is confusing, but they basically fall into the "youkai (*1)" section.
容姿、能力、性格、危険度、活動時間、活動場所、それぞれ殆ど共通の特徴は少ない。	Rarely if ever is there any commonality in their appearance, ability, character, danger level, or even their time/place of activity.
強いてあげるとすれば、妖怪は人間を襲い、そして捕食する事位である。	Just about the only thing in common between youkai is that they attack and eat humans.
必ず例外は存在するが、それでもいくつかの傾向が見られる。	There are definitely exceptions, but many fall towards this trend.
・妖怪は、人間より長命である。	Youkai have longer lifespans than humans.
・妖怪は、人間より肉体が頑丈であり、五体がバラバラになる様な事があっても、すぐに治癒する。	Youkai have more robust bodies than humans, so even if they're split into five, they heal right away.
・妖怪は、人間よりも信念に作用されやすく、精神的なダメージが致命傷となる。	Youkai are more easily affected by faith than humans, and as a result spiritual damage are fatal wounds.
・妖怪は、余り群れで行動しない。	Youkai generally do not move in groups.
・妖怪は、自分の都合しか考えない。	Youkai only think of themselves.
人間にとっての最大の敵となるのが妖怪である。	Youkai are the most dangerous enemies to humans.
だが、余りにも多様な妖怪が居る為、個々の妖怪の特徴を知ってから妖怪退治に出掛ける必要があるだろう。	However, since they are very varied, one must be informed of each of their traits before heading out to exterminate them.
被害内容	Potential Damages
人攫い、捕食、家畜泥棒、畑泥棒	Kidnapping, Feeding, Livestock Theft, Crop Theft
人間にとって最も敵らしい敵である。	Humans have no greater enemy than the youkai.
妖怪は、食事の為に人間を襲う。	Youkai attack humans for food.
ただ必要以上に人間を襲わず、空腹時にしか襲わない事が多い。	Most do not attack when they are full and satisfied.
人間の数が少なくなると、妖怪も困るからである。	If the human population drops, youkai will face trouble as well.
また、必ずしも人間だけを食べているのではなく、獣や鳥、魚、野菜、果物、酒等、人間と食生活は変わらない。	They do not eat only humans, but animals and birds, fish, vegetables, fruits, sake, and other things humans normally eat.
ただ、その上に人間を食べる事があるだけである。	Still, they consider humans a delicacy above all else.
人間以外に、家畜や農作物を持って行かれる事もある。	Other than humans, they also steal crops and livestock.
これも深刻な問題である。	This is a serious problem.
対処法	Countermeasures
ちゃんとした対策を練らないと、妖怪退治は難しい。	Unless one thoroughly plans and studies countermeasures, youkai extermination is difficult.
人間と妖怪では、肉体的な能力差は歴然であり、まともに戦ったのでは一瞬で捕食されてしまうだろう。	Youkai are infinitely physically stronger than humans, and trying to fight them will only have you end up as food.
ただ、人間を襲う理由の殆どが、捕食する為である。	The reason most youkai attack humans is because they need a source of food.
だから、退治するのでなければ、自分の代わりに食べ物となる何かを差し出すのが良いだろう。	That's why one should offer something else in place of themselves.
牛一頭でも差し出せば、暫くの間は襲われる事は無いだろう。	Offering a cow will save you from attacks for a while.
結構義理堅い所も多く、逆らわない相手には友好的に接してくれる．	There are many that have a sense of duty, and if you don't go against them they'll treat you friendly.
しかし、妖怪退治を行うとなれば話は別である。	Exterminating youkai is a different story.
人間は、定期的に妖怪退治を行っているが、これは先祖代々から伝わる仕来りである。	Humans regularly perform exterminations, but this is a custom passed down from ancestors.
幻想郷では、人間は妖怪退治を行わなければいけないのだ（＊２）。	In Gensokyo, humans must exterminate youkai (*2).
妖怪退治を専門とする職が存在する。	There are occupations that specialize in youkai extermination.
例えば博麗の巫女は最も有名な専門家の一つである。	For example, the shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei is the most well-known specialist.
妖怪退治では、肉体にダメージを与える武器ではなく、何か『謂われ』のある武器が望ましい。	In extermination, one does not use weapons that cause physical damage; weapons with an "origin" are more preferable.
妖怪は、名前や言い伝え等、精神的な攻撃に弱い。	Youkai are weak to spiritual attacks such as names or traditions.
＊１ 紛らわしいが、種族としての妖怪は、言わばグラフの『その他』である。　その他が一番多いグラフもよくあるだろう。	1: It might be confusing, but youkai as a race belong to the "Others" section of the graph. I suppose there are quite a few graphs where "Others" is the largest category.
＊２　そうしないと、幻想郷のバランスが崩壊すると言われている。	2: It is said that the balance of Gensokyo will crumble if they do not.
