特徴	Features
動植物の気質そのものの正体。	It's the true nature of animal or plant spirits.
見た物、聞いた物、触れた物、味わった物を考え方に変換する、謂わば感性変換器の様な存在である。	Able to convert what they see, hear, touch or taste into thoughts, it can be said that they're like an emotional converter.
肉体を持たず、姿は不定で空気の様なものである。	Having no physical body and specific form, they're similar to air.
何処でも通り抜ける事が出来、形もその意思により自在に変化する。	They can go anywhere through any obstacle, and they can change their shape at will.
死者そのものの具現である亡霊と勘違いしやすいが、幽霊は必ずしも死者の霊とは限らない。	They're often mixed up with ghosts, which are embodiments of deceased people, but phantoms are not necessarily spirits of the deceased.
幽霊のまま生まれ、そのまま消えていく者も居る。	Some are even born as phantoms, and remain so until they dissipate into nothing.
亡霊とは異なり、死者から複数の幽霊が生まれる事もある。	Also, unlike ghosts, one deceased body may spawn several phantoms.
その性質は妖精に近く、妖精が自然の具現なら、幽霊は気質の具現である。	Their characteristics are rather closer to those of fairies; like how fairies are the embodiment of nature, phantoms are the embodiment of spirit.
生息場所（＊１）は、幻想郷のあらゆる所。	They live (*1) pretty much anywhere in Gensokyo.
騒がしい場所には騒がしいのが好きな幽霊が、陰気な場所には陰気なのが好きな幽霊が、温泉には温泉好きな幽霊が集まるのである。	Phantoms that prefer a noisy atmosphere gather in noisy places; the same goes for gloomy places, or even the hot springs.
活動時間は夜の方が多い。	Their time of activity is usually at night.
幽霊は消えるか消えないかギリギリのか細さで存在している者が多く、日光の下では活動しにくいからだと思われる。	It's assumed that because many of their existences are on the verge of dissipating, it makes it difficult for them to act under sunlight.
また、幽霊の体温は非常に低い（＊２）。	Also, their body temperature is very low (*2).
下手に触れると、悪くて凍傷を負う畏れもある。	If you carelessly touch one, you may even be frostbitten.
逆にこの冷たさを上手く利用したのが、肝試しである。	However, this coldness can be utilized for one's benefit; for example, as a test of courage.
幽霊が集まりそうな場所を通り抜ける肝試しは、夏の暑い夜に一服の清涼感を与えてくれる（＊３）。	Going through a place where many phantoms would gather, a test of courage is a good way to feel a breeze on a hot summer night (*3).
被害内容	Potential Damages
幽霊の怖さは、近くに居るものの精神に影響を及ぼす事である。	The most threatening feature a phantom possesses is the ability to affect the minds of people around it.
陽気な幽霊が近くに沢山いれば、いつの間にか自分も陽気になってしまう。	If you're surrounded by jolly phantoms, you'd eventually feel jolly.
反対に、陰気な霊が多くいる場所では、鬱になってしまう。	For glum phantoms, vice versa.
例えば、自殺の名所と呼ばれる場所は、陰気な霊が集まる場所の事を指しているのだ。	For example, the places famous for suicides are often the places inhabited by glum phantoms.
強い精神力を持ち合わせていない人間が、強力な幽霊と出会うと精神を破壊される事もある。	Those without enough mental strength might even get their mind crushed, if they happen to face a powerful phantom.
また、温度が低いため、直に囲まれ続ければ凍傷になる事もある。	Also, due to their low temperature, sustained contact may cause frostbite.
対処法	Way of Dealing With
幽霊と出会わないようにする事はほぼ不可能なので、出会っても影響を受けないようにするしかない。	Avoiding an encounter with phantoms is next to impossible, so all you can do is be unaffected upon contact.
一般的に、幽霊は脆く儚い存在である。	Generally, phantoms are pale and fragile existences.
正常な人間であれば数匹程度の幽霊に囲まれた所で何ともないだろう。	Even average humans should be fine if it's only a couple of them.
ただ、精神が弱っている状態（＊４）で幽霊に囲まれると危険である。	However, it's a different story if that person is mentally weakened for some reason (*4).
対処法は、心を強く持つ事と幽霊を恐れない事しかない。	Keeping confidence in yourself and having no fear is the way to deal with them.
ただし、幽霊が大量に溜まっている場所（＊５）には面白半分で近づかない方が良いだろう。	It must be noted that you shouldn't go to phantoms' gathering places (*5) out of curiosity.
精神が破壊されてしまうかもしれない。	It may result in your mind being shattered.
もし、そうなってしまったら専門家（＊６）にお祓いして貰う他ない。	If that happens, there's no other way but to seek an exorcism from a professional (*6).
反対に、わざと幽霊に憑かせて性格を矯正する方法も研究されている。	On the other hand, there's research going on about the possibility of correcting one's personality by means of phantom possession.
この技術を使う事で、自殺志願者を思いとどまらせたり、野菜嫌いを克服したり出来ると言われている。	This technology is expected to stop someone from suiciding or get someone to overcome their dislike of vegetables.
幽霊を捕獲する手段が確立出来れば、ほぼ実用段階にまで持って行ける様である。	Apparently it's almost ready to be put into practical use, once a method of capturing phantoms has been established.
人間の豊かな精神社会の未来は、幽霊に掛かっていると言っても過言ではない。	It's not far-fetched to say that the future of human mentality rests on the phantoms' shoulders.
