PatchCon is a real-time strategy game where the player must choose 5 touhou characters to create an army from and defend Patchouli's library from swarms of oncoming attackers that are after the books. Unlike most RTS games, PatchCon is single-player only, and all lost units will respawn after a short delay (delay varies between characters).

Gameplay

(To be put in a separate article)

After choosing your 5 characters from either 6 preset armies or creating a custom team from the 32 available characters (all of which must be unlocked, except for the starting team), you will find yourself in Patchouli's library with some starting coins and nothing happening on-screen. Once you've trained a few characters and pressed start, wave after wave of enemy characters will appear and try to attack the 4 small bookshelves near the center of the map. If you can't stop them in time, they'll steal one book each and fly off. If you lose all 20 books then the game will end.

The clock in the top right corner shows you how far you've progressed. You start the game at noon and end at midnight. Beneath the clock are your book and coin counters. Below those are your spell cards, which in order of left to right do the following:

  • Red card: Reduces enemy HP by 50% of its maximum. This also applies to off-screen enemies.
  • Blue card: Reduces the respawn time of all of your characters by 90%.
  • Green card: Greatly increases the attack and movement speeds of your characters.
  • Orange card: Prevents enemies from stealing books.
  • Brown card: Grants your units temporary invulnerability.

All spell cards are cast instantaneously, and all but the red card have a duration of 15 seconds. You can cast as many spell cards at once as you want, but each card can only be used once, so use them wisely.

Below your spell cards is a display that shows of how many of each of your characters are alive, how many are waiting to respawn, the time left to respawn a unit, and the level of each character type. The two buttons beneath your character portraits are to purchase more (top), and increase the level of the selected character (bottom). Leveling your characters applies the benefits to all units of that type;, current, future and waiting to respawn. The various status elements of the character type selected are shown below. These are (from top to bottom) Name, Level, HP, Attack, Defense, Ranged Defense, Attack Range, and Movement Speed-Movement Speed While Attacking. The large Start or Next button at the very bottom allows you to start the game or bring the next wave of attackers more quickly.

To control your army, select the portion you want to control by left-clicking and dragging a marquee around the units, or select all units of a single type by double clicking a unit or pressing the corresponding hotkey (a s d f g). Right clicking gives the selected characters orders, either to move or to attack where you right-clicked.

Once the clock strikes midnight, a large wave of Marisas (Known for "Borrowing" books and coming back with them very late, if at all) with above-average stats attack the library. At this point, if you clear the screen of all enemies at without losing all of your books, then you win the game.

Story

Insert story translation here.

The basic gist of it is that the various beings of Gensokyo are all trying to steal books from the library, and you have to stop them.
