東方紺珠伝 ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom (Romanized: Touhou Kanjuden, meaning "Eastern story of the Ultramarine Orb") is the fithteenth official game for the Touhou series. It was announced on April 22nd, 2015 and a trial version was released at Reitaisai on May 10th 2015. The full version was released on August 14th, 2015.

Gameplay[]

This time, quite a bit of emphasis is placed on grazing.  Staying near enemy bullets will cause all items on screen to fall slower.  In addition, every stage is divided into several “chapters.”  Upon completing each one, your performance will be evaluated based on how many times you had to retry the chapter, how much you grazed, and what percentage of the enemies you killed.  If you performed well enough, you will be rewarded (with a life fragment in Legacy mode, and a bomb fragment in Pointdevice Mode).

The main attraction is the fact that there are now two gameplay modes:

Pointdevice Mode is the newly introduced game mode.  Here, you get one life but infinite retries.  Each time you die, you will be sent back to the start of the chapter you’re currently in (it’s not as bad as it sounds.  During boss fights, each individual nonspell and spell card is a chapter all on its own).  In addition, you will lose an amount of power equal to 0.01 x (the number of times you have retried that particular chapter).  But most importantly, keep in mind that while your lives are infinite, your bombs are not.  Try to graze aggressively and frequently in order to earn more points, and thus more bomb fragments at the end of chapters.  Conserve your bombs as much as possible and only use them if you get stuck on a particularly nasty section, otherwise you may hit a wall as you’re forced to perfect a pattern later on without any help.

Oh yeah, and one more thing…  If you leave the game in the middle of a Pointdevice Mode run, you can come back and resume it at any time later!  Simply select Pointdevice Mode and the character you were playing as again in the menu, and you will be prompted whether you’d like to continue or not (left option is yes, right option is no).

Legacy Mode is the game mode we all know and love–you receive a set number of lives and embark on a nonstop journey to the final stage.  If Pointdevice Mode isn’t your cup of tea, this is the place to go.

Because of the overall higher difficulty of the game, ZUN himself has said that if you want to beat Legacy Mode, “You’ll need perseverance to clear it, but try tackling Pointdevice as the main mode first of all. :-)”, as he claims the game was balanced around that mode.  That said, consider giving Pointdevice Mode a try first before anything else. Have fun dodging, and teach those darn Lunarians a lesson!

Story[]

In the wake of the urban legend incident, Lunarian forces have begun appearing in Gensokyo with the intent to “purify the Earth.” Though Kaguya and Eirin decline to get involved directly, believing that’s what the Lunarians would want, Eirin offers the heroines her “Ultramarine Orb” medicine which allows the user to see brief glimpses of the future, giving rise to the new Pointdevice Mode. With this aid, the heroines set out to confront the Lunarians, even resolving to travel to the Moon itself.
