Alice is one of only a few people known to live within the Forest of Magic. She's a magician known primarily for her skillful use of dolls as well as being a loner. She gets in many fights with Marisa but they're actually kind of close, sharing many of the same interests and even teaming up during Imperishable Night. It's like a love/hate relationship really.
In Immaterial and Missing Power the vast majority of her attacks involved dolls in one way or another, either attacking for her or being used as explosives. She really is a doll specialist, but dolls are more like a hobby in comparison to her full power. Alice is always seen with a locked grimoire in her hands, which is thought to be the same "Grimoire of Alice" that she fought the protagonist with as the Mystic Square Extra Boss.
Because Alice, unlike Marisa, is much more interested in strategy and hates having to win a fight from sheer overwhelming power she always holds back even if it means losing.
Fun Facts
- The name Alice is a reference to the main protagonist in Lewis Carroll's famous novel Alice in Wonderland, as the majority of enemies in Mystic Square's extra stage are card soldiers of the same type seen in the Walt Disney animated movie version of the novel. The title of the BGM used in that stage also directly translates to "Alice in Wonderland".
- Alice is the first major enemy character from the PC-98 games that has appeared in the Windows games. She was alone in having performed this feat until Yuka Kazami, the final boss of Lotus Land Story, recently appeared in Phantasmagoria of Flower View.
- Because of Shinki's dialog in which she mentions that everything in Makai is her creation, it is thought that Alice is Shinki's daughter. However, there's been no further mention of this since then and Perfect Memento states that Alice was once a human who became a youkai magician. It is unknown whether this is a retroactive change of continuity, merely a mistake by Akyu, or if fans were mistaken from the beginning when thinking Alice was Shinki's daughter.
- Two of the dolls she carries are called Shanghai and Hourai. Shanghai has appeared with several different outfits but is always depicted with a red ribbon tied in a bow in its hair. No official artwork of Hourai exists (it appeared only as Alice's final spellcard) and thus all fan depictions of Hourai are original. In Imperishable Night, Alice uses Shanghai to assist firing her shots. Both dolls are used as weapons by Alice in Immaterial and Missing Power.
- Alice may have an obsession for dolls. In some doujins, she is depicted as playing with dolls, making dolls, and in a 4koma series, trying to deliver a handmade doll to Sakuya, Santa-style.
- Despite being mistreated often in fanworks (or perhaps because of it), Alice is one of the most popular characters, similar to Meiling. Because of her cold exterior and cowardly true persona, she is frequently depicted as a down-on-her-luck tsundere (alternately hostile and lovesick) girl, especially when Marisa is involved.
- Being known as the "Seven-Colored Puppeteer" or "Rainbow Puppeteer", Alice apparently believes in a correlation between color and power level. During her dialogue with Reimu, she asserts Reimu's powers are only equal to 28.5714% (or 2/7) of her own powers, due to Reimu's outfit only consisting of two colors. This appears to be a recurring theme in Perfect Cherry Blossom as Yukari, Ran and Chen are all named after colors and have relative power levels equivalent to their colors' place on the visual spectrum.
- Alice's last name is based on the character Miss Murgatroyd from Agatha Christie's book "A Murder Is Announced."

Alice Margatroid The stage 3 boss, kinda ordinary magician. Her main ability is use of magic. She is a versatile magician, that has no specific strong or weak point in any area. If you ask me, she is similar to Marisa, or rather I'd say a youkai version of Marisa. Alice is a collector as well, and has the habit of collecting magic items, especially magic books. As they both share the same hobby, she often clashes with Marisa so they're kind of in a cat-and-dog relationship. Most recently, she is interested in collecting dolls that have a story associated with them. She had no evincive reason to attack Reimu and company. They were chosen for the target of her magic because they were there. Dominating the enemy with overwhelming power is not fun at all for Alice, so she always sees her opponent's reaction and tries to fight with power that exceeds the opponent by a hair. Even if she loses, she doesn't show her full power. That's because she thinks it would be the end of the rope for her if she lost with full power. In this point, she is somewhat similar to Reimu.

Alice Margatroid Species: Magician Location: Moderate sized house in the Forest of Magic (has no specific name) Ability: Use of Magic A natural born magician. While her appearance is almost identical to humans, she is not one. She is a kind of so called humanoid youkai. Her house is crammed with a lot of dolls. The sight is so spooky that it scares rare visitors away. The house of dolls is strangest even in the forest of the bizarre. It's no wonder that they tend to run away from there. Her personality is uncaring towards others, and tends to be obsessed with magic. She pretends that she has a strong attitude, but truthfully she is kind of a coward in her heart. She is quite average in melee fighting. Both her physical strength and magic powers are average. Instead of that she has very high dexterity, which enables her to control many dolls as if they're living beings. That dexterity shines even among all of Gensokyo.

A magician living in the Forest of Magic. Her ability allows her to use magic. Puppetry is a part of magic too. She rarely goes out by herself, but she had no other choice this time. She has many similarities to Marisa, namely living in the Forest of Magic, being a magician and a collectomaniac. However, they have an absolute difference in that Alice is a natural-born magician while Marisa is a human. Other than that, they're also different in using forest's mushroom as preference or not. Of course, Alice is the one who doesn't like using them. Because of that and other things, they're on bad terms. Magic is her weapon. A magician's magic is always originally developed by the magician.

Seven-Colored Puppeteer Alice Margatroid Species: Magician Ability: Use of magic A magician living in the Forest of Magic. The greatest difference between Alice and Marisa is that Marisa was born human and trained to be a magician whereas Alice was born a magician. You might imagine magicians as being indoor-type people; in Alice's case, you'd be right. She spends most of her time alone, and the forest is a good place for that. The forest is quite humid, however, and her dolls will become damaged without her constant care. Because of this, she's currently planning to make a doll that will automatically take care of other dolls.
Book Synopsis
Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red
- Main article: Article and Interview: Alice
Alice has been making straw effigies and nailing them to trees in the forest behind the shrine, a ritual usually done in order to curse someone (similar to the use of a voodoo doll.) However, she claims that she is only doing it to further her research in creating an independent doll.
During the following interview, Alice complains that since Aya spied on her nailing the effigies, the effectiveness of the ritual was reduced. She talks about how although such effigies don't look like anyone in particular, they symbolically represent someone, then evades the question of who that someone might be. Finally, she mentions that she thinks she saw an independently moving doll "a long time ago", and has been trying to create one ever since.
Perfect Memento in Strict Sense
- Main article: Perfect Memento: Alice Margatroid
- Alice is known among humans for doing performances with her dolls during festivals.
- Alice was once human and became a youkai magician through training. She is young as a youkai, so she is considerate towards humans and still behaves as one of them would.
- Anyone is welcome to stay over at her small house in the Forest of Magic, but as she never makes conversation and only carries on with her research, she is unsettling company.
- Most of Alice's dolls are made by her. They do the household chores, but since she is controlling them, this isn't really any easier for her.
- Alice is believed to rarely attack humans, however she will gladly accept challenges. During battle, she is busy controlling her army of dolls, so her weak point is herself.
