Review[]
It's with the release of their PoFV album that Golden City Factory really started to shine. While still fairly true to their techno roots, they've developed a willingness to play with the music and create something unique. The songs on this collection show rock, orchestral, world music, and 8-bit influences; they doesn't always work out, but it's never completely boring.
The songs are still quite heavy on synthesizers, but they are used to good effect in the non-rock tunes and rarely feel gratuitous. If you demand that an album sound 100% acoustic, though, GCF is not your thing.
Standout tracks
- 03. フラワリングナイト
A rock arrangement of Sakuya's theme with heavy backing guitar and bass, and interesting synthesizer work; finishes up with a drum solo. Reminiscent of their earlier "Imperishable Night" arrange on 東方 Destiny.
- 06. 今昔幻想郷 ~ Flower Land
A beautiful song. Techno, technically speaking, and completely synthesizer-lead... but the use of backing instruments such as xylophone and clavinet, and subtle pads, lend this arrange a mysterious and playful quality. My favorite from the album.
- 08. 六十年目の東方裁判 ~ Fate of Sixty Years
An interesting, exotic track with smooth strings, breakbeats and wordless vocal samples. The lead flute sounds a little fake, but well, not everything can always be perfect...
- 10. 御伽の国の鬼が島 ~ Missing Power
An unusual chiptune-inspired arrange with some classic synthesizers and some very creative ones. Also uses brass and choir singing. Not your usual techno.
